Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0 is the term given to to what appears to be the next industrial revolution we are experiencing. This is because it is the fourth revolution in manufacturing. The third revolution being the introduction of computers and electronics the fourth sees the introduction of smart manufacturing. This is where the user has little to do with the manufacture and it can be created by completely autonomous systems and machine learning.


It is unpredictable what this will mean for creative industries. Generative art has been around longer than we know and this is art that the user programs and has little involvment in the outcome. It may just be me but i find it difficult to think about what effect and industrial revolution would have on someone like me that just wants to digitally design things. I have little need to know how the things i used are manufactured. It could be that someone with my skillset could go on to help design these autonomous machines but again, way out of my comfort zone and maybe more appropriate for an engineer.

Its difficult for me to talk about a subject i dont completely understand. Reading up about it confuses me more. From what i can gather from some of the sources provided, being creative is a desirable skill during this change as it will need to see people adapt, be agile and thing of new ideas in new ways.

Smart Technologies

Smart technology is something ever present in society. We are seeing regular objects being enhanced technologically and being dubbed "smart" products. One such example is Hapifork, a smart fork. Yes. A mundane object such as a fork got the smart treatment. But how exaclty do you improve on a kitchen utensil? You get it to tell you off if youre eating too fast. The Hapifork sees to help stop the pain and suffering of eating too fast. Using sensors, the fork will vibrate and light up signalling the fork is being used to rapidly and means the user is eating too fast. BioTechnology

Biotechnology is the meeting of human and computer design. Based on biology, it can include things like genetic modification and bionics. It has been used to genetically modify crops in the agricultural industry and create highly responsive prosthetics for amputees. These practices have been adopted by artists to create some unique pieces of art. One artist in particular has created various body modification using biotechnology. Stellarc has had an ear surgically implanted into his left arm that hears and trasmits sound. In an article published by Dezeen, i found a quote rather interesting.
