BioTechnology

Biotechnology is the meeting of human and computer design. Based on biology, it can include things like genetic modification and bionics. It has been used to genetically modify crops in the agricultural industry and create highly responsive prosthetics for amputees. These practices have been adopted by artists to create some unique pieces of art. One artist in particular has created various body modification using biotechnology. Stellarc has had an ear surgically implanted into his left arm that hears and trasmits sound.

In an article published by Dezeen, i found a quote rather interesting. It was "Negroponte believes we've now reached a stage when the natural and the artificial have blended."(Howarth.D, 2017). Whilst it is true that we have adapted to technology in our everyday lives, certain things still spark debates.

This are the top stories that appear on Google when searching DNA editing on December 6th 2018. Whilst it may seem that biotechnology is gaining traction, it is also building up an equally large resistance and still battles ethically. It future is almost certain. We will see more technological advancements but will it be accepted while the long term effects of some of these practices are unknown.

One such artist working on biotechnological enhancements is Stelarc. His project "Ear on arm" sees him surgically implant an ear onto his arm. Although it has had its issues, he hopes to one day have a microphone inplanted for others to tune in and hear him. This type of extreme body modification with technology is something that Stelarc prides himself in doing. He strives to push the boundaries of biotechnological enhancements.
